COVID certificate for travel or events
Update: 29-07-2021

If you would like to travel within the European Union, or if you would like to attend an event or activity in the Netherlands, you will usually have to show a negative test result, proof of vaccination or proof of recovery. You can present these using CoronaCheck. The COVID Certificate for travel with CoronaCheck is also known as the EU Digital COVID Certificate.`

3 forms of COVID certificates

You can get a COVID certificate of a coronavirus entry pass in CoronaCheck in 1 of these 3 ways:

  • Proof of vaccination
Full vaccination for COVID-19, with a vaccine authorised by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Most of the time, CoronaCheck can retrieve vaccination data from the registration systems of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), the municipal health services (GGDs).
  • Proof of recovery
Proof that you recovered from COVID-19 less than 6 months ago.
  • Negative test result

Checklist for using CoronaCheck

Take the following 4 steps before you travel. Or take step 2 until 4 for attending events and activities.

Step 1: Check the travel advice (applies only if you want to travel)

Check the travel advice for your destination (in Dutch only). This will tell you which of the 3 proofs will allow you to enter the country. European countries decide for themselves which of these proofs they accept from people entering the country, and what conditions apply. This includes the type of test that a country accepts and how recent the result must be. The countries also decide for themselves what additional measures they impose, such as quarantines for travellers.

Step 2: Download the CoronaCheck app or go to CoronaCheck.nl.

Download de Coronacheck app
CoronaCheck works on smartphones running on Android (Android 6 or later) and iOS (iOS 12 or later, on iPhone 5s and later). The app can be downloaded free of charge from the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.

Or print a paper COVID Certificate from CoronaCheck.nl
You can print the COVID Certificate for you and your children from the website CoronaCheck.nl. The app only allows you to show 1 COVID Certificate per person. Use this option if you:

  • don’t have a smartphone; or
  • prefer to have your COVID Certificate on paper; or
  • are travelling with people who don’t have the app; or
  • want to attend an event with people who don’t have the app.

Step 3: Upload your proof

Upload 1 of these 3 forms of proof:

  • Uploading proof of vaccination
    • Go to the CoronaCheck app or the website CoronaCheck.nl.
    • You will need to log in with your DigiD. Check whether your DigiD works. Applying for a new DigiD takes a few working days.
    • The information about your vaccination will be automatically downloaded from the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) (if you have given permission for this) or the municipal health service (GGD), and then automatically uploaded in the CoronaCheck app or on the website CoronaCheck.nl.

  • Uploading proof of recovery
If you have received a positive PCR test result from the GGD within the past 180 days, but not within the last 12 days, the GGD will issue digital proof of recovery. The GGD will not issue digital proof of recovery if you have received a positive result from a rapid antigen test.

    • Go to the CoronaCheck app or the website CoronaCheck.nl.
    • You will need to log in with your DigiD. Check whether your DigiD works. Applying for a new DigiD takes a few working days.
    • The information for your proof of recovery will be automatically downloaded from the GGD, and then automatically uploaded in the CoronaCheck app or on the website CoronaCheck.nl.

The result of a serological test cannot be used as proof of recovery in the CoronaCheck app.

  • Uploading negative test result
    • Get tested for coronavirus.
      • If the test result is positive, you may not attend the event and you may not travel. You must self-quarantine.
      • If the test result is negative, enter the code of the negative test result in the CoronaCheck app or on CoronaCheck.nl.

Step 4: Have your QR code scanned

  • In case of travel: scanning when boarding
The CoronaCheck app or the website CoronaCheck.nl automatically registers your proof of vaccination, proof of recovery or negative test result in the form of a QR code. This QR code will be scanned when you start your trip, for example when you board the aircraft or when you cross the border in your car.
  • In case of activities and events: scanning at the entry
The CoronaCheck app or the website CoronaCheck.nl automatically registers your proof of vaccination, proof of recovery or negative test result in the form of a QR code. You can have this QR code scanned at the entry to the event or activity. If the screen is green, you have a valid coronavirus entry pass. The QR code of the coronavirus entry pass only shows the person who scans it:

    • the initials of your given name(s); and
    • your date of birth.

The CoronaCheck app does not show whether you have been tested or vaccinated or whether you have recently recovered. The person who scans the QR code only sees a green screen.
